Sowbug Roundup
Posted by David BolinDid the Sowbug this weekend. Rode up with Lowell Friday. We stopped on the way to see the cabins Dad has been building in Mtn. View. The Sowbug was good. Lots of folks there friday. Tying tables were full. I finally got to cast the 8wt Ultra Weave. I drove back up early Saturday morning and had breakfast with some of the folks from the Fly Fishing Arkansas forum. It was good to put a few names with faces. Spent several hours at the Sowbug. Ended up buying the Ultra Weave. Calvin, if you're reading this, I'm ready to hit the flats. Fished below the dam at Bull Shoals with Terry Beeson Saturday afternoon. Went in at the golf course to midge the flat water. There were plenty of fish holding in the area but we had a cross wind in our face. Casting was a pain. It wasn't exactly classic midge fishing. With a #20 brown/olive midge 6 inches under an indicator, I'd shoot it out about 30 feet between gusts and then walk down the bank as the wind carried the indicator down stream and back to the bank. It was a hoot. I was stumbling along the bank following my indicator down the river. It was like flying a kite that would never quite get airborne. Every now and then the wind would let up for a few seconds and I'd pick up a fish. We would have put up some good numbers if it weren't for the wind...that's my excuse anyway.
