Cool New Sharpening Tool
Posted by David BolinI dropped by the Grizzly show room in Springfield MO to browse a few weeks ago. After walking down almost every aisle in the store I happened on this new wood tool sharpening machine. It's an automated version of the Scary Sharp system. I posted my sharpening routine a few months ago. It consists of several grits of sandpaper glued to glass plates. This new Work Sharp machine uses the same methodology. It has a series of round glass plates that you stick sandpaper to. I studied the thing in the store for an hour and finally broke down and bought it. It came with two glass plates. I bought two extra plates so I can do 8 grits. I also bought a glass plate with leather on one side for a strop. With a piece of sandpaper on the back of that plate, I've got 9 grits mounted and ready to go (major overkill). I've sharpened 4 plane blades with the machine. They look pretty good. I put 30 degree bevels on them with 35 degree micro bevels. This machine can be adjusted to cut 20, 25, 30 or 35 degree bevels on plane blades up to 2 inches wide. This is going to make sharpening a snap. The only down side so far is that I can't get all the scratches out of the finished surface of the bevel. That's annoying, but I don't think it will affect the performance of the iron. I posted a picture of the finished bevels in the rod making album.
