Fishing the Little Red
Posted by David BolinFished the Little Red Monday with Matt West and his dad (Dan). Lowell and I put the boats in at Ramseys and took them down the river. We started about a mile below the landing. That's where these two pictures were taken. Dan is standing in front of a small island that I remember fishing when I was in college in the early 80's. It's almost always our first stop below Ramseys.
We caught several rainbows but nothing really big. No browns. The browns are all in the upper section of the river this time of year...along with all the fishermen. I suppose combat fishing has it's place in a fly fisherman's itinerary, but we were looking for a more laid back day without the crowds. We were the only ones on the river below Ramseys...perfect!
Nat, a mutual friend from Matt's Midnight Oil (coffee house) days, joined us later in the day and landed the 16 inch rainbow in this picture. Nat is new to fly fishing. Looks to me like he's got it figured out.
Matt and Dan spent several days on the river this week. I got an update from them on the way to the airport this afternoon. Matt was a little disappointed. He's seen better days on the Little Red. I suppose that's all relative though. Dan had a great time catching browns every day. The biggest browns he's ever caught. I expect they'll be back.
